October 2024: Blogging with Van

Our library system has some great programming lined up for you in October.   In addition to Halloween and Fire Prevention Month, LPPL is also celebrating Star Wars Read Month and Smokey the Bear’s 80th birthday!

HALLOWEEN

Spooky season is here, and our branches will be celebrating in various ways.   We have interesting Halloween craft programs for all age groups.  This is just a small sampling:  Thibodaux will have Diamond Art Halloween stickers.   South Lafourche will be a Terra Cotta Scarecrow Craft.   Lockport will have a Picasso Jack-O-Lantern Craft.   Some programs do require registration so check with your local library for dates and times and lots more programs.

FIRE PREVENTION MONTH

In honor of Fire Prevention Month, local fire departments will be bringing their trucks to various branches.   They will be demonstrating how the truck works, speak about fire safety, and photo opportunities will be given.  There will be plenty of excitement for everyone.   It’s also a good time to thank a firefighter for the work they do in our communities.   See below for dates and times and call your local branch if you have any questions or need more information.   Here is a list of dates for the visits.

Bayou Blue: October 7 @ 10 AM

Larose: October 10 @ 1 PM

Lockport: October 10 @ 10:30 AM

Thibodaux: October 14 @ 11 AM

Gheens: October 14 @ 3 PM

Choctaw: October 14 @ 2 PM

Raceland: October 22 @ 10 AM

STAR WARS READS MONTH

For all Star Wars fans, we have a large number of items in our libraries available for checkout ranging from DVDS to books.   Stop by your local branch to take a picture with one of our lifesize cardboard cutouts of various Star Wars characters.    These figures will be switched periodically between the branches.    Some of the characters represented will be Baby Yoda, R2D2, Rey, the Mandalorian , Darth Vador, Anakin, a storm trooper, and Chewbacca.

SMOKEY THE BEAR READING CHALLENGE

It is Smokey the Bear’s 80th bday.   Each branch will be having a Smokey the Bear Reading Challenge.       Children ages 4-9 will be encouraged to read fire prevention materials, and they will receive incentive stickers, a stamp, and Smokey cards.   Logs will be given to keep track of materials read.   Come and learn interesting facts about fire prevention plus receive fun prizes.

There is a wide range of programs planned for October all waiting for you.    We are looking forward to seeing you.   - Van, Reference Librarian
