November 2024: Blogging with Katina

Libraries have a long and storied history of being learning centers for people of all ages.

Ours is no different.

Part of the Lafourche Parish Public Library’s mission is to provide resources that will inspire lifelong learning and advance knowledge.

NOVEMBER IS FAMILY LITERACY MONTH

November is Family Literacy Month, and each Lafourche Parish library branch is hosting special events this month to celebrate and promote family literacy.

So what’s family literacy?

According to the U.S. Department of Education, family literacy “addresses the intergenerational nature of literacy.”

Simply put, family members (regardless of age) learn together.

Everyone benefits.

Throughout the year, the library offers a multitude of activities that help to promote literacy. One of our cornerstones of learning is Storytime.

Want to learn to conduct Storytime at home?

This month, the Choctaw Branch Library, 1887 Choctaw Road, is hosting a book character bingo for children ages 4 to 11 alongside a story hour fundamentals session for parents on November 11 at 4 p.m.

Children will have a blast playing bingo with a book character twist while parents learn the ins and outs and ease of creating and enjoying story time at home.

CODING AND COMBAT AT YOUR LIBRARY

Want to learn to code?

There’s a fun (and free) way to do that via your library card with Code Combat: interactive, online gaming software that teaches different coding programs in an utterly enjoyable way.

Players (who must be able to read) take control of an in-game hero and code their way through levels and challenges while learning programming concepts. Players embrace learning as they play and write code from the start of their adventure.

Learn more about learning coding with Code Combat at the following library Lafourche branches:

·         Bayou Blue Branch Library, 198 Mazerac Street: November 12, 1 p.m.

·         Lockport Branch Library, 720 Crescent Avenue: November 25, 10 a.m. Ages 8 and up.

Registration is required to attend, so don’t wait to reserve your spot at the library.

If you can’t make these events, ask your library branch’s staff how to get setup on Code Combat so you can game and code at home.
