After a string of disappearances in 1975 Missouri, a one-eyed boy heroically thwarts a kidnapping, igniting a chain of events that blur the lines between triumph and tragedy as the townspeople of Monta Clare confront hidden truths.
All the Colors of the Dark by Chris Whitaker is an epic story spanning over 25+ years. We follow the lives of Saint and Patch throughout their childhood years to the impactful events that lead them into adults. It is set against the backdrop of 1975 America in the small Missouri town of Monta Clare. When Patch stops the kidnapping of a young girl in his community, he becomes the one abducted instead. This single act of bravery sets the tone for the entire novel. The town and its residents will never be the same. The trauma and then guilt resonates for the next twenty years as everyone tries to solve the questions of who the kidnapper is and where are the girls that were kidnapped? All the Colors of the Dark is a mystery, with a serial-killer, some romance and family drama all rolled into one. Although it isn’t technically a thriller, there is suspense and a whodunit component that keeps you guessing with twists and turns, I never saw coming.
All the Colors of the Dark is an incredibly written novel with complex characters that keep you engaged throughout the story. The story isn’t just a tragedy but what happens to those involved when the tragedy is over and you still do not have all of the answers you need for closure. It is a complex story that comes together at the end. It is a testament to resilience, obsession and unwavering support. It is a story that will not quickly leave you and must be read. This is a literary masterpiece at its finest. - Laura, Library Director
